2. William R. ALEXANDER 6,7 was born in APR 1868 in Hungerford Twp, Hastings Co, Ontario, Canada 8.

Harry's Mother was never married to his father. Sylvia Hathaway Hoyt told me that Harry's natural father's surname was Alexander. Jennie worked as a domestic and as a cook. According to the St James Episcopal Church Log Book for 1882 Jennie was confirmed 15 April 1888 and she was residing and in service at Fort Brady. There was a soldier named William Alexander who was stationed there at the time that Jennie became pregnant with Harry. William Alexander worked as a cook and he left suddenly. There is absolutely nothing that indicates William Alexander is the father of Harry. His surname was Alexander and he was in the right place at the right time. I attempted to find some records that might provide more details about Jennie's work at Fort Brady but have been unsuccessful. I have been told that it was common practice that if a soldier got a woman pregnant there would be no official record and he would be quietly shipped out. According to the records of Fort Brady, William enlisted 16 August 1890 for a term of 5 years. The Fort Brady muster rolls show William Alexander went on a 3 month furlough 16 Aug 1893. He never returned and there is no mention of him anymore. His military records do not say anything except that he was honorably discharged 15 Nov 1893 with no mention of why he did not serve his full 5 year term. I do not think William became ill as there were other soldiers listed in the muster rolls as being in the infirmary and there is no mention of William Alexander ever being in the infirmary. Harry stated that he was born in 1897. According to the 1900 and 1910 census records he should have been born in 1892-1893. I think he was born in September 1893 as It is close enough to the census dates to be reasonable. It also fits in with the fact that Jennie obtained a divorce in Jan 1894. I have not been able to locate a divorce decree, but the Sault St Marie Evening News dated 13 Jan 1894 states that Mrs Jennie Reynolds has obtained a divorce. She probably was divorced in December 1893 or January 1894.
William was 5'5" and Jennie was 6' tall. Jennie's father, Winn, was 6'5 1/2" tall. Harry was 5'10" tall. It is highly unusual for a man to be smaller than his mother. Everything seems to indicate that Harry's father must have been small.

There is a William R. Alexander buried in Thomasburg Cemetery, Hungerford Twp, Hastings Co, Canada. Also Leola R and J Earl Alexander.
